RPIIT Chat — Privacy Policy
Last updated: 7 October 2026 · Operated by R P Educational Trust (RPIIT), Bastara, Karnal, Haryana, India
RPIIT Chat is the internal messenger for staff and students of RPIIT and members invited by the institute. This policy explains what information the app uses and why.
Who can use it
Only people whose mobile number or email is registered in the RPIIT ERP, or who are added by an RPIIT administrator, can sign in. A student or staff member may also add up to 20 outside contacts (for example family); those contacts can only chat and call the person who added them. There is no public sign-up.
Information we use
- Account details — your name, mobile number, email, and role (staff/student) from the RPIIT ERP, used to sign you in and show you to other members.
- Profile photo — if you choose to add one.
- Messages and media — text, photos, documents, voice notes and locations are kept on RPIIT's server for 7 days so you can restore recent chats after logging in again or changing phones, and are then deleted (undelivered messages after 30 days at most; chats with disappearing messages turned on are deleted from the server seconds after delivery). Older chat history is kept only on your own phone. Class-group posts are kept on the server for 30 days so students who join later can see them. Status updates are deleted after 24 hours.
- Location — only when you tap "Send location"; it is shared in that chat only.
- Camera and microphone — only during voice/video calls or when you take a photo. Calls are sent directly between devices (encrypted with WebRTC) or via RPIIT's relay server; calls are not recorded.
- Notifications — a notification token so we can alert you to new messages and incoming calls.
- Login codes — one-time codes sent by SMS, voice call, or email to verify sign-in.
How it is used and shared
Information is used only to run the messenger. We do not sell data, show ads, or share it with third parties, except service providers needed to operate the app (SMS/voice code delivery, email delivery, and the browser's push notification service), and where required by law.
Deleting messages, blocking and reports
You can delete messages for yourself or for everyone, turn on disappearing messages (24 hours, 5 days or 30 days), and block anyone. You can send a report or suggestion to RPIIT administrators from any chat; only the text you write is sent, not your messages. Your chat history stays on your phone.
You can delete your account at any time in the app (⋮ → Delete my account) or by following these steps. Safety reports may be kept for up to one year. Accounts of people who leave the institute can be removed by administrators.
